Approach

This resource has been developed in partnership with a racially diverse group of children, young people and educators across different sectors of Education.

We’d like especially to thank the children and young people of St Eunan’s Primary in Clydebank (West Dunbartonshire Council) and the young people of Drumchapel High in Glasgow for their wise words.

The children and young people told us:

They would like to learn about this topic in an interactive way - for example through videos, discussions and fun activities.

They would like to learn about correct terminology so they are not ‘cancelled’, especially those who are not Black or Brown. This is a reference to ‘cancel culture’ online, where people feel their voices/opinions are shut down on contentious topics.

We recognise that experience and knowledge won’t necessarily lie with the teacher when exploring these issues. We have therefore created workshops rather than lessons which provide opportunities for mutual and reciprocal learning through a posture of listening. This will support adults, children and young people to learn together, balancing the teacher/learner power dynamic.
