2nd and 3rd Level

This resource has been developed in partnership with a racially diverse group of children, young people and educators across different sectors of education.

We recognise that experience and knowledge won’t necessarily lie with the teacher when exploring these issues. We have therefore created workshops rather than lessons which provide opportunities for mutual and reciprocal learning through a posture of listening. This will support adults, children and young people to learn together, balancing the teacher/learner power dynamic.

All the second and third level materials can be accessed through the themed buttons at the top of the page.

We don't suggest a particular order through which you should explore the themes, start with those which are best suited to your learners needs. However, we recommend that the 'Taking Action' workshop activities are planned only after learners have developed their understanding of the causes and effects of racism.

Some of the workshop content could be distressing and upsetting for some individuals, especially for those with experience of racism. It is crucial, therefore, that educators create a supportive environment where the relationship between the learners and educators is positive. We strongly recommend working with the Safer Braver Spaces guidelines before you deliver the thematic workshops. These guidelines are particularly important if there is only one or a small number of Black or Brown learners in your class, or if there are learners in your class who have newly arrived in Scotland.
