• This resource can contribute to the development of the attributes and capabilities across the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence, supporting learners to be: successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

This resource can also support you to make progress towards the following Health and Wellbeing Experiences and Outcomes:

    • I know that friendship, caring, sharing, fairness, equality and love are important in building positive relationships. As I develop and value relationships, I care and show respect for myself and others. HWB 1-05a

    • I understand that people can feel alone and can be misunderstood and left out by others. I am learning how to give appropriate support.  HWB 1-08a

    • As I explore the rights to which I and others are entitled, I am able to exercise these rights appropriately and accept the responsibilities that go with them. I show respect for the rights of others. HWB 1-09a

    • I recognise that each individual has a unique blend of abilities and needs. I contribute to making my school community one which values individuals equally and is a welcoming place for all. HWB 1-10a

    • Through contributing my views, time and talents, I play a part in bringing about positive change in my school and wider community. HWB 1-13a

    • I recognise that we have similarities and differences but are all unique. HWB 1-47a

The Arrival

A story about welcoming and belonging

This is the story of how a new arrival to a class can help children to learn about and celebrate difference.

The story draws on elements of the storyline approach, taking place over a series of ‘episodes’. These are designed to develop children’s empathy for others, their understanding that we are all unique, and the knowledge that this is something to be celebrated. Following the story will support a range of Health and Wellbeing outcomes (see curriculum information above), as well as the development of the Four Capacities.

Thanks to the staff and children at Hillview Primary, Inverkip Primary, North Kelvinside Primary, Oakgrove Primary, Our Lady of the Missions Primary, Sacred Heart Primary, St Eunan’s Primary, St Joseph’s Primary and Thornliebank Primary for their help in creating and refining this story.
